Evansville draws another major sporting event – this time a national ice skating competition.

Sports Corp officials, along with Mayor Lloyd Winnecke announced the National Theatre on Ice competition will come to Ford Center in 2017.

It’s expected to be the largest sporting event the River City has ever hosted, according to U.S. Figure Skating officials. Sports Corp executive director Jason Sands says he expects to book more than 5,500 hotel rooms for tourists.

“They sold 6,000 rooms in Cape Cod,” says Sands. “And they’re going to be in Birmingham, Alabama this year here in a couple of weeks and that’s a city of more than a million residents so it really shows that we’re on the right track here.”

2017 is a historic year for the National Theatre on Ice competition. The event will be celebrating it’s tenth anniversary.
